Desk essentials

A useful workspace starts with the right fit. Use these checks to decide which accessories belong on your desk before comparing individual products.

Monitor arms

Check your screen’s weight without its original stand, its VESA mounting pattern and the arm’s supported weight range. Screen size alone is not enough. Measure the desk thickness and clearance behind it, and confirm the desktop can safely support a clamp. Glass and hollow desktops need particular care and manufacturer approval.

Laptop stands

Measure your laptop and check the supported dimensions and weight. Keep vents clear. A stand that raises the screen usually works best with a separate keyboard and mouse, so your hands can stay at a comfortable height.

Cable management

Choose a tray that fits your power strip and plugs with room for ventilation. Decide whether screws are acceptable; adhesive and clamp options need compatible surfaces. Leave enough cable slack for any standing desk movement. Avoid crushed cables and overloaded power strips.

USB-C hubs and docks

A USB-C connector does not guarantee video output, charging or a particular data rate. Check your computer’s port specifications, the dock’s power requirements, monitor resolution and refresh rate, and operating-system compatibility. Confirm whether a power adapter is included.

Desk lighting

Check lamp dimensions, brightness adjustment and how it mounts. Position it to avoid reflections on your screen. A monitor light bar must fit your display and leave room for any webcam.
